Emergency Numbers

Emergencies and SOS calls

Dial 112 in case of emergency, and the officer on duty will put you through to the appropriate emergency service - police, fire brigade or ambulance.

Emergency calls made from payphones are free of charge.

Medical and dental emergencies

The Swedish medical system is a state run system, so instead of visiting a local private general practitioner, you will attend a local medical centre or clinic, called an "Akutmottagning" or "Verdcentral". You will need to present your passport, and an E111 form if you are a citizen of a European Economic Area (EEA) country. Non-EEA citizens should consult with their travel agents about the need for insurance before they travel. Visits to clinics cost up to SEK 240, and an overnight stay in a hospital will cost SEK 90 per 24-hour stay (for patients over 16 years of age). Further information on healthcare is available from Stockholm Care,

tel: +46-8-672 24 00, fax: +46-8-656 12 99.

Drugs and medications

Prescriptions are dispensed at local state-run pharmacies called "Apotek" in Swedish. These are open during normal shopping hours. A 24-hour service is available in the major cities. If you are already on medication, it is a good idea to make sure that you have an adequate supply before leaving for Sweden.

Dental treatment

Dental surgeries and clinics are signposted "Tandlakare" or "Folktandverd" in Swedish. Emergency dental services are available in major cities to cater for patients out of normal hours.
