Staying in touch

When you are away from home, it is not the last thing to have an opportunity to keep in touch. In Gothenburg you will find various facilities for this purpose.

Telephoning

Swedish phone numbers consist of 5 to 8 digits excluding area codes. Area codes vary from 2 to 4 digits and start with 0 if calling from within Sweden. Calling from abroad you exclude the 0 and add the country number 46. Calling from Sweden you dial double 00 before the country’s number.

Local calls cost SEK 2-3 from public pay phones and hotel rooms. Sweden has introduced a new rate scheme whereby both local and long distance calls are priced at the same rate. The rate varies by the time of day and weekday. The cost per minute between 8 am to 6 pm is 23 Ore. After 6 pm till 8 am and all weekends and public holidays the rate is reduced by 50% to 11,5 Ore per minute. Every call is subject to a connection fee of 45 Ore. Normal rate for calls to North America is SEK 1.95 (USD 0.22) per minute (2000). Rates are higher from hotels.

Europeans/Asians: Your GSM mobile telephone will normally automatically work as if you were back home. You will be able to receive as well as make calls.

The telephone company sells telephone cards (TeleKort) at newsstands, post offices, major train stations etc. Some public phones also accept major credit cards.

Mail

Postcards and letters up to 20 grams can be mailed for SEK 6 to destinations within Europe, SEK 7.50 to the United States and the rest of the world.

It is also possible to receive mail while you are in Gothenburg. If you're uncertain where you will be staying, have your mail addressed to "poste restante" and sent to 404 01 Gothenburg. Collection is at the Post Office at Nordstan, tel: +46-031-62 39 76.
